Rolling snowMountains, holy lake water, green grass, running Tibetan antelope… This is the first impression given by the beautiful Tibet. But what people don’t know is that for a long time, the Tibet power grid has been in an isolated grid operation state, the grid structure is weak and the regulation ability is poor. When encountering dry seasons, it faces serious power shortage. Power outages are common, and some areas even have no electricity to use.
Tibet-China Internet Engineering is by far the most complex and challenging plateau power transmission and transformation project in the world. The world’s highest altitude 500 kV transmission tower – the 8L196 Tower, known as the “Tower King”, is the largest and most powerful “big brother” in the project, connecting 3,410 surrounding towers together. Its pagoda base is located on Dongdashan Mountain in southern Tibet, with an altitude of 5,295 meters, nearly 100 meters higher than the base camp of Mount Everest. This “China’s height” can be regarded as the peak of world power construction.
The story behind this peak is even more touching.

After enduring altitude sickness, they work for more than 500 days and nights with loads.
Due to the constraints of the natural environment, economic and social development, and power construction costs, by the beginning of this century, many places in the Tibet Autonomous Region have been using the traditional pine lamp or ghee lamp lighting methods. As soon as he entered Tibet, Zhang Bo, who was then deputy manager of the Power Transmission Construction Branch 4 of Gansu Power Transmission and Transformation Engineering Co., Ltd. and executive deputy manager of the Tibet-China Internet Engineering Package 5 project, was thinking that this project must be done well so that the herdsmen can live a life with electricity.

“The first challenge we encountered was altitude sickness. The construction site of the 8L196 tower is more than 50 kilometers away from the project department. For every 1 kilometer of the vehicle, the average change in the altitude pressure difference reaches 50 meters, and the altitude pressure difference changes to 2,500 meters.” Zhang Bo Yongsheng could not forget the first time the convoy felt when he was on the “Devil’s Highway” of Jueba Mountain: his head was swelling, his chest was stuffy, his heart was squeezed strongly, his lips were purple, and beads of sweat were flowing down his cheeks… Despite constantly sucking oxygen, he could not breathe, and the “buzzing” roar sounded around his ears, and even if he spoke face to face, it was difficult to hear the sound.
If Cinema is only a few days old, it is still tolerant. But more than 50,000 builders of China Power have worked here for more than 500 days and nights!

Every morning, young commandos carry dry food and weigh about 10 cmThe instruments rushed to the construction site of Dongdashan Pass to investigate the foundations of the towers under construction. In order to inhale a little more oxygen, they endured chapped lips and sore throat and breathed with both mouth and nose. In order to save physical strength, they climbed up with their hands and feet, and their arms and knees were damaged. Zhang Bo joked, “We are four-wheel drive!”
The higher they climb, the steeper the slope. In some places, the slope is even close to 90 degrees, and there are gravels that keep rolling down under their feet. A slightly larger movement will cause strong physical discomfort. Safety officer Xiao Lei recalled the thrilling scene of hypoxia due to altitude sickness. Once, the temperature in Dongdashan was as low as tens of degrees below zero. A comrade was working on the tower. He suddenly felt dizzy and lost consciousness with his hands, so he was ready to get down as soon as possible. However, during the process of getting off the tower, he failed to catch it due to lack of oxygen. When he was still 2 meters away from the ground, he fainted and fell down! “At that time, I was in front of the tower and hugged him and quickly inhale oxygen. My hands that were frozen could not be roasted with fire, so I could only warm his handbag with a cotton coat. After more than ten minutes, I woke up and slowly took off my gloves and rubbed my fingers to feel it.”
Shi Xiaolei once had altitude of trembling with his arms, a blue face, and a breathless altitude sickness at an altitude of 4,700 meters. Everyone advised him to return to Lanzhou, but he insisted on staying. He said, “I am the first batch of Tibet personnel in our project, so how can I go there just by saying that!” Shi Xiaolei was at the construction site. Photo provided by me
Hail clattered on the safety helmet, and each bolt was tightened in my hand.
If altitude sickness can be adapted slowly, then the extremely harsh weather and fragile ecological environment are a bigger “stumbling block” that hinders the progress of the project.
“A mountain has four seasons, ten miles of different skys.” The terrain and landforms along the Tibet-China Internet Project are complex and diverse, with a changing climate, and the annual effective construction period is only 6 months. The project crosses the core area of the Hengduan Mountains and the hinterland of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and is located in the “Three Rivers” fault zone with the most complex geological structure and the widest distribution of geological disasters in the world. Among them, Dongdashan is located in the watershed between the Lancang River and Nujiang River. The air pressure is very unstable, and blizzards, hail and strong winds often come without warning.

“It is different from in plain areas. It rains and ices here.Babylanhail. I usually dig holes for a whole morning, and I have to change people in half an hour in Dongdashan. The work efficiency is too low.”Babaylan Zhang Bo said.
Before departure, the project team held a meeting to prepare a customized version of the “Single-Based Construction Plan” in response to the special circumstances of the high altitude of the Tibet-China Internet Project. But they actually arrived at the construction site and found that the project was much more difficult than they thought. Under the vegetation of Dongdashan, there is hard granite. In order to avoid damage to the vegetation, they can only give up advanced mechanical equipment and use primitive manual excavation to excavate the foundation pit. At first they could dig 0.5 meters a day, but when they dig more than 3 meters, a large amount of water gushed out from the foundation pit dominated by weakly weathered rock formations and granite. In addition, the rock formation became harder and harder, so they could only dig 10 cm a day.
One 10 cm, and the other 10 cm… The project department continuously organized special seminars to adjust the construction plan. At this “commandering height”, they worked overtime and dug 4 foundation pits more than 0 meters deep!

On the night of May 7, 2017, just as everyone returned to the station with joy after finishing the foundation for replenishment, a blizzard suddenly hit and the temperature dropped sharply to minus 17 degrees Celsius. The sudden cooling will affect the strength of cast-in-place reinforced concrete, and the insulation work of tower foundations is urgent!
The strong wind swept over with hail in an instant, hail the size of a pigeon egg hit the safety helmet, and the cotton coat was instantly soaked. The hail in the sky turned into dense snowflakes again, and the mist, snowflakes and cold wind mixed together, turning into a vast white patch of night. On this night when the young commandos were out of sight, they stepped on the slid stones covered by snow under their feet and climbed up the construction site of the top of Dongda Mountain with a blizzard. The team members who were trembling with cold set up insulation tents for the tower foundation and raised coal stoves. The temperature in the tent slowly rose. Everyone kept the tower foundation like a child who cared for their own children and guarded it until dawn.
Although they were exhausted, when they saw the sun rise, everyone really felt the warmth and happiness of the sun. Afterwards, the project chief engineer Zhang Yijun wrote on “Green Wood Stone”: “Looking back, on Dongdashan, at an altitude of 5,295 meters, the deep footprints on the snowy night are our coolest selfies and perfect life!”

In order to allow the public to use power, the “loss business” must also be done
Because the construction environment is complex, the Tibet China Internet EngineeringThe materials of each base tower are specially customized and need to be transported from Shandong, Guangdong, Hubei, Zhejiang and other places thousands of miles away.
In order to ensure the safety of vehicles and personnel, the Tibet China Internet Engineering Department has set up four checkpoints and medical points along the way, and will only be released after confirming that the status of the vehicle personnel is normal. Rumei Checkpoint is the busiest one. Not long after departure from here, I arrived at the Juebashan Highway at an altitude of 3,940 meters. Above the road, there are cliffs and below the rushing Lancang River. There are neither guardrails nor road signs in some places, and it is common to encounter rockfalls or landslides. The most difficult thing is to pass the “72nd turn” through the Nujiang River in Sichuan-Tibet Line. Because the tower material is long and the transportation vehicle is large, in these fast and steep U-shaped bends, once you encounter a car coming from the opposite side, the master who transports the tower material must stop first and let the other party pass before going back on the road.

The “last mile” of tower materials transportation is mostly too slow and not suitable for cableway construction. The mule and horse teams that have been walking on the ancient tea and horse road in Yunnan for a long time were “invited” by builders. If transported by car, the tower materials can be transported to the construction office in one day, but the mule and horse team will take three to five days, and the transportation cost is 10 times that of car transportation. Why do they have to do such a loss-making business? Fang Renting, an employee of the State Grid Tibet Power Transmission and Transformation Company, explained, “As long as the people can use electricity, the transportation cost is high, it is worth it!”
Even when even mules and horses cannot provide physical strength. Shi Xiaolei recalled, “When the 8L196 tower is grounded and led down the line, it is necessary to transport a generator weighing about 120 kilograms. We specially picked a very strong horse. Unexpectedly, at an altitude of 5,200 meters, the horse suddenly foamed at the mouth and could no longer climb. In this harsh environment, the horse’s physical strength could not reach the level of the plain. The last 95 meters were carried by us. “
On July 10, 2017, the tower formation entered the final stage of attack. The young commandos once again climbed the tower with oxygen cylinders on their backs, firmly tightening the last arm of the “Tower King” on the torso of the tower. When the last bolt was tightened and the last high-altitude operator went down the tower safely, the “Tower King” with a total weight of 55 tons and a height of 58.5 meters was finally completed.
“The world’s highest altitude 500 kV transmission tower was born by your hands!” When the commander-in-chief announced the exciting news, “We succeeded, we won!” Everyone present cheered and hugged each other tightly, tears of joy were surging. The mind flows.

After the establishment of the tower foundation, Zhang Bo was deeply moved: “After two years of generator life, Rumei Town is about to be powered on, it can be said that ‘the electricians will bring the light wherever they go’. Maybe in the future, they will travel on the Sichuan-Tibet Line, and you will truly feel the light you bring! This light is Komiks is a gift we give to Tibetan mothers!”

When the founding of New China in 1949, the national installed capacity was only 1.85 million kilowatts, which was only equivalent to the current two units. Before the reform and opening up, 330 kV was the highest voltage level of the power grid. Today, my country has the highest voltage level of ±1100 kV DC transmission and 1000 kV ultra-high voltage AC transmission lines in the world. Compared with the founding of New China, my country’s power generation increased by more than 2,000 times. At present, the average annual electricity consumption per capita in the country is about 695 kilowatt-hours, and the electricity consumption problem of the population without electricity has been solved.
Whether the mountain canyons or snowy plateaus, the “electric power sky roads” have given the wings of taking off for economic and social development. Whenever the lights on the snowy plateau are on at night, the transmission lines are running steadily, and generators are roaring thousands of miles away. That is the most magnificent sound of the forging China. (China Youth Network reporter Yang Yue Yang Weiqiong Intern reporter Cao Ruohong)
